Arrested development: Sevco’s latest excuse for failure

Yesterday we heard from Whinging Warbo that he wanted a Newco reserve team in the SPFL lower leagues. His rationale? That he wanted his young charges to play against those who are trying to make a living out of the game. The funny thing about the under 20’s setup is that at clubs like Celtic for example, players are trying to make a living out of football.

Warbo’s men are currently 8th and 2 points off being 16th in a 17 team league. That he desires a greater challenge is actually yet another lie, what he wishes for is easier opposition. Before that can be proven, let us examine Warbo’s quote:

“You can never replicate three points on a Saturday afternoon alongside players maintaining families and paying mortgages. Every point means something and it doesn’t in Under-20s.”

So let’s first take the first sentence to task. If you are a footballer 3 points is your life! I played 11 years, all of them badly, but i shirked the drink the night before the game but never a challenge in it. Football isn’t about responsibility off the field it is about dedication on it.

The idea that players in the Division 3 sorry i mean League 2, are paying off their mortgages through football is fanciful. These players are on win loss match payments and sign on fees. They work other jobs between training and playing. Warbo would know this if like Sally he had opposed them a few years ago.

The second sentence reeks of the guff we are so used to out of Ibrox, every point matters at Celtic and i am sure every other club in the Development League. The fact Sevco have been elevated to the top League without actually ever having played in the top flight is as much to do with the corruption that is rife in Scottish Football as much as anything. That they seemingly do not take the League seriously can be seen by their League position, a full 28 points behind League leaders, Celtic.

Herein lies the issue for Warburton and the Newco. Celtic are turning out players for the SPFL as Sevco can attest with MOH and Ross County with a swathe of players who stung us a month ago. We are seeing the fruits of Kieran Tierney’s development at the same time that Nesbitt is playing at Partick on loan and Henderson at Hibernian. Youth development not only works at Lennoxtown, it is vital to the future of Celtic FC.

Warburton was reported this week as having an altercation with renowned over investor Dave King. The fracas revolved around Sevco being able to develop players for sale. Now a few days on we have a new take on the situation, we merely need to get rid of youth development and put teams in Leagues whereby they can’t win anything meaningful against teams trying to aspire.

The arrogance is amazing. Give up youth development nationally, as it is embarrassing to Them. Stop aspiring teams with teams that can’t be promoted, try to win trophies that have no real kudos attached. What it will do is systematically kill junior football, destroy semi professional football and leave those playing in B teams with hollow medals whereby the Champions can play for the same lower league trophy next year.

If the former City trader really thinks that crucifying Junior Scottish football is the way to get over an argument with a tax cheat, then heaven help us if without their world class penalty taker in tow, they lose their next few games. If Hibernian hadn’t bottled it yesterday, we would have to hear about a different form of restructuring, again for the good of Rangers/Sevco Scottish football.
