Clearing out the deadwood

Celtic currently has one of the most bloated squads in its history with a dozen players who are either on loan or never used at the club. The youth system has no clear access to the first team as aspirants to playing in Hoops are kept behind journeyman and players past their prime.

In defence Celtic needs a massive restructure.  Emilio Izaguirre is past his prime and with  clubs offering money for him he should be sold and Kieran Tierney should receive a 5 year bumper contract.

Efe Ambrose has cost Celtic in many crucial games, his last error cost us the League Cup when he was sent off as the last defender when we were cruising at 1-0 up. He should have no more opportunities to waste Silverware with his clumsiness and poor positioning.

Dedryk Boyata looks like a younger version of Efe Ambrose, there is a guarantee that he will make at least one massive error whenever he plays. In the Derby, he was lucky not to give away a penalty and fell over nearly gifting Miller a goal. He is not Scottish quality let alone European.

Mikael Lustig  like Izaguirre is past his best and this has become noticeable. He should be moved on at the end of the year and his position along with Centre Back needs investment. Charlie Mulgrew has played well in a team that has performed terribly since his return from injury. His versatility may earn him another contract. Saidy Janko has been blighted by injury, lets hope he has a good year next year and earns his jersey, the same can be said for Jozo Simunovic who it seems didn’t have a deadline day physical before signing.

This of course leaves Erik Sviatchenko and Kieran Tierney. Two out and out first team defenders out of ten. Now i would maintain Simunovic, partly as we have paid a fortune for him, also keep Mulgrew for his versatility, whilst Janko deserves a chance to prove himself. But the defence at Celtic is a joke and needs a complete overhaul. The rest need to be shown the door and their wages put into contract upgrades for KT and a centre back and a right back who can take the club into the Champions League.

Celtic has a glut of midfielders and the clean out has to begin with the Captain Scott Brown. I have never seen a player come back worse from an injury that Broony. He looks a fraction of the player he was last year. The same can be said for Stefan Johansen, the both of them spend half the game roving around the defensive lines being dispossessed or turning the ball over with poor passing.

James Forrest is already leaving and Callum McGregor should follow him out the door. After an amazing preseason 2 years ago he has not developed as we would have hoped. Bringing McGregor on vs the Shame instead of Commons still has me scratching my head. The new manager will hopefully deploy Roberts, Christie, Allan, Rogic, Commons and Biton as the favoured midfielders. Armstrong and GMS, who are so favoured by Ronny, should maintain their squad places but there is clearly more talent at the club in their positions than either possess.

The strikers are only worth talking about as with a new manager we might actually play two at once. Leigh Griffiths needs a partner, but Kazim-Richards and Carlton Cole are not the men we need. CKR has only endeared himself for picking fights with security, he roams lazily around the periphery doing very little whilst he is constantly on edge. Carlton Cole seems to live on twitter as he is never playing for Celtic.

If Stokes can sink Sevco in the Scottish Cup then i would have him back, but only as the third choice striker. Celtic fans demand success and rightly so, but the club must spend in key areas to achieve this. Celtic desperately need a Centre Back, Right Back and maybe another Striker to again become a force in Europe. Before that can become a reality though, the club needs to show the deadwood the door.
