Derk is gone

Today the news has broken that arguably Celtic’s worst signing since Rafael Sheidt has agreed terms to leave the club. Yes, Derk Boerrigter is gone. Now this is great news for Celtic’s wage bill as £17k has just been lessened from the weekly burden. This money should be immediately reinvested into the club by way of contract upgrades for Tierney and Rogic.

With Tierney it is becoming apparent that the vultures down south have been alerted to his talent and every transfer window between now and what the SMSM will present as his inevitable departure to greener pastures for his own good, will be peppered with speculation. Days after Southampton were said to be interested for £5 million Liverpool are interested for £10 million.

People will say that he has a long term agremeent, for his age he does not. He will be worth 3 times what is on offer once he is 24. We should be looking at a Cesc Fabregas or Ryan Gauld style 7 year deal with an impossible buy out clause as a sting. We need to build a defense not have to rebuild it every season. If we can keep Sviatchenko and Tierney together for a few years anything can happen with a little investment alongside them.

The departure of Boerrigter is a win for Celtic, the money we will save will be a useful commodity. But as we speak the crows are circling at our ‘selling club’, it is time we laid down a marker and said if you want to buy our players, then go mortgage your stadium. If we want to have a run at the UCL, we need to maintain not just stability in the squad, but make sure that our finest players are kept in Hoops for the long term. There is no point spending money on speculators like Boerrigter when we have gems like Tierney on our books after all.
