Sustaining 42 clubs in Scotland is inordinately difficult. The trickle down broadcasting income is the life’s blood of most clubs. Occasionally, a cup tie or a transfer might provide sufficient revenue to remain solvent, but it is a struggle to survive. There are some success stories. The renaissance of Hearts being the best example. After a period in administration, they arranged a CVA with their former owners and creditors, raised £2.5m and introduced a direct debit scheme to pay back the principal sum. Sixteen thousand supporters now attend home games as they challenge CFC for the title. They are an honest club who realize that CFC, on any given day, should prevail but that does not stop them from trying. Most non-partisan supporters would be delighted if they won the title this season.

If two of them gain promotion, those in the Premier division will face fresh challenges next season. This is a system that works well. The drama of the play-offs last year captured the imagination of all Scottish football fans.
