Benkovic injury must force the clubs hand to bring in a Centre Half

Filip Benkovic has sent a scare through the Celtic camp with an injury which could see him return to parent club Leicester and leave Celtic exposed at the back.

The big Croatian has been fantastic for Celtic since coming on loan with many supporters dreaming out loud of a permanent move, this however will not happen as we all know the club isn’t going to spend 8 figures on a player.

Regardless, Celtic remain exposed at the back and with Boyata almost certain to leave, Compper stealing a wage, Hendry miles away from the standard and Simunovic a bomb scare who is far from the standard required, at least one reinforcement is needed to partner Kris Ajer.

That we have let the window run down this far without bringing in another Centre Half is ridiculous, we can all see the issues we have in that position and with the Champions League starting in July we will be in need of a player bedded in that position to give us a shot at the European riches.

Before we plan for that, we first have to qualify for the group stages and win the League, this year is a title race and not just between ourselves and the Newco, Aberdeen and Kilmarnock look to have the legs to take this into the split and are playing fearless football against Celtic particularly away from Paradise with a high press that has paid dividends.

Thankfully it isn’t too late, the window remains open, the club is flush with money and we are top the League with a game in hand which we will play tomorrow, a win on the field will see us move 6 clear, a signing to strengthen the defence will see us take a far larger step toward 8 in a row and beyond.

Our new attacking options are playing some fine Football and are a joy to watch, now is the time to add to the back line and put this title race to bed, if we were not going to sign a defender this window before, we must now.
