Bring Michael McGovern back to Paradise

Michael McGovern’s heroics for Northern Ireland should earn the former Celtic youth keeper a contract in England’s Premier League. But seeing he is on a free transfer the deluded have of course been linked to the Ulsterman as he fits their transfer budget.

Celtic should in fact go in and bring him home to Paradise. He looked far more assured against Germany than Craig Gordon did in several Europa League matches and the League Cup Semi Final in particular.

Now I doubt McGovern would get any game time at Sevco anyway, Wes Foderingham has been mooted as a future England International for months now by the DR and ET and they are never wrong about anything.

For McGovern, a move back to Celtic would link him up with fellow Tim and Ulsterman Brendan Rodgers. He already knows the place back to front and under a new Gaffer would be given fresh opportunities.

He obviously would not want to come back to be a reserve again and should be offered first chance with the number 1 on his back. If he were to build on his impressive form for Ulster, the out of contract former Accies shot stopper could restore the clean sheets we had become accustomed to under Fraser Forster.

Of our other goalkeepers, Bailly has featured in a few matches without being overly impressive whilst Fasan seems to be going through what McGovern did in his earlier tenure, being left behind and out of sight.

With the Champions League qualifiers drawing closer, Celtic need a number 1 who can take us through to the lucrative group stages and restore our continental pride. McGovern fits the bill in every sense.

He is a Celtic fan, a product of our youth academy, he has played both in the Scottish Premiership and for his national team showing outstanding skill and if that’s not enough he is also on a free transfer.

What more could we ask for?

With Ulster being cruelly knocked out of the Euro’s by an own goal, McGovern can hold his head high that he and his team mates played some exciting football and punched well above their weight.

As the dust settles on the North’s campaign and he looks for employment, he should be offered Gordon’s shirt and a chance to replicate his European form from Country to club.

We have a massive season ahead of us, including friendlies against Barcelona, Leicester and Inter Milan, Champions League qualifiers and hopefully beyond as well as 3 games against the Shame. If he was promised the first team shirt then surely this would turn his head back to Paradise.

Go on Brendan, bring him home.
