Results in a recent poll over who should provide cover for Moussa Dembele at Celtic between Ryan Christie and Gabriel Agbonlahor have shown that 83% favour the young Scot over the veteran Englishman.

Ryan Christie is in the last year of his contract but unlike some of his team mates is not agitating for a release, the Celtic fan has been desperate for his chance in Hoops and with Moussa gone is looking to grab the opportunity with both hands.

Earlier this week Christie showed his enthusiasm for the opportunity and Celtic fans have responded by overwhelmingly backing the talented attacker instead of buying a stop-gap solution.

Speaking in the Daily Record, Christie said:

“This season can help nail down my future at Celtic and breaking into the team is all I’ve been thinking about. I’d be delighted if I can stay long term but first things first, I need to play more games.”

“It sounds a bit selfish but I’m hoping Moussa leaving opens up an opportunity for me and it’s then up to me to take it.”

“I wasn’t exactly pushing him out of the door last week – he’s a big lad – but I wish him all the best!”

“A lot of people speak about the number of games we have to play and we’re delighted to be in the Europa League but that means another six midweek matches.”

“I’m sure the manager will be calling on everyone in the squad so then it will be down to what I do.”

With Brendan Rodgers already having shown faith in Christie during the last Glasgow derby, when Christie came on as a substitute for Celtic’s record transfer Odsonne Edouard with the score at a mere 1-0, it shows that he already has the managers respect and trust.

As he said in his interview, the opportunity to play more games is upon him and if he is to stay long-term at Celtic in the Hoops quest for the magical 10 in a row, then it will be his performances between now and January that will decide if he is offered a new contract.

While the ball is at Christie’s feet, as far as the fans are concerned, it appears unlikely that Gabby will see much time at Paradise save for playing in charity matches.
