Connell misses chance to step into Tierney’s shoes sooner rather than later

Sharing is caring!

Irish youngster Luca Connell was signed this year on a development fee from Bolton as a player who could play both defensive mid and as a Left Back with the player himself generally viewed as a project.

However, with Tierney still recovering and Boli having a twisted ankle yesterday, he is now in line to debut for Celtic at Left Back when he gets back from representing the Irish under 19’s in Armenia.

Our defence is very much up for grabs with Julien expected to debut at Centre Half but alongside who is anyone’s guess with Ajer, Jozo and even Nir Bitton all in line to partner our marquee signing.

If Ralston is played at Right Back or if Ajer remains on the flank after a great game yesterday will be interesting, for the friendly you would imagine Ralston will start and give Kris a break with the return leg coming in mid week.

But on the left if Johnny Hayes isn’t risked we may see Calvin Miller, if Luca was at Paradise he would likely get a chance to stake his first team claim.

Both Hayes and Connell are similar in the sense that they are natural midfielders who can take on defensive duties on the left flank, however young Luca could easily be molded into a Left Back, it worked well with Ajer moving from the defensive mid role to Centre half and now even Right Back.

It will be an interesting game on Saturday with the talk being that James Lea Siliki being monitored by Celtic, we will get to see him close up on the weekend.

Also players like Karamoko Dembele, Armstrong Oko-Flex, Liam Henderson and Andrew Gutman will be pushing for time alongside debutants Julien, it is just a shame we wont see Connell against the French team.
