The SMSM is talking about Leigh Griffiths and his opportunity to break the scoring records of Charlie Nicholas and even Henrik Larsson.  That Griffiths is in line to overtake such legends is itself incredible, but what if he were to go down injured? What is our plan B, or dare i ask it, our plan C?

Griffiths has scored 35 goals this year but it hasn’t been without calamity. He missed two vital penalties, one in the League Cup defeat to Ross County and the other in a 1-1 draw with Hamilton. His performances in Europe had him apologising for a string of missed chances vs Ajax where he took criticism for being too selfish. The facts are, he has to be selfish, no one else is putting their hand up.

Griffiths is carrying the team in attack at the moment, in fact he has been for most of the season. When he doesn’t score we don’t win. Our attacking options are a shambles without him. Stokes, Scepovic, Citfci and Nesbitt are all on loan and have tallied 4 goals between them this season, all to Ciftci.

Carlton Cole spent months getting fit last year and now in March he still hasn’t featured for an extended run and only has 1 goal to his name all year. Colin Kazim Richards has scored against a non league team and looks far from a 20 goal a season striker that Celtic desperately need to back Griffiths up.

In all our forwards have scored 41 goals in all competitions. Leigh Griffiths has 35 of those, the scorer of 4 of the remaining 6 is on loan in Turkey, 1 of the other goals is to a vetran who cant make the team sheet and the other goal was vs a team outside the League pyramid.

If Celtic win today vs Kilmarnock and indeed if we win the Premiership again this year, it will be because of Leigh Griffiths. That Ronny can play a one man attacking line with no support up front is due to Griffiths inane poaching ability. Should he suffer an injury, we do not have a player who can play that role. Cole is old and Richards seems to have a lack of urgency in his play.

This summer Celtic needs to sell Scepovic, Stokes and Ciftci, bring back Nesbitt and buy a quality striker to replace the other three. Bargain buys and Hail Mary purchases on deadline day are not putting goals in the back of the net, the only forward doing that, is Leigh Griffiths.
