Saidy Janko put in an impressive shift in the first half against Sturm Graz. His opening five minutes showed a few nerves, but he quickly settled and showed the reason Celtic have stuck by him after a terrible time last year with injury.
Janko looked energetic in the searing heat in Graz, he was box to box playing good balls to Scott Allan and across the midfield, terrorising the Sturm Graz defence on the overlap.
Not only did he provide an attacking option, he was back handy in defence after forward moves. With Lustig out hurt, Celtic may have found the Right Back that we will take into the Champions League qualifiers.
Like most of the team he was substituted at half time to make way for more candidates to survive Rodgers axe. After this performance i would assume he will sleep well tonight in the knowledge that he has a Celtic future.
Eoghan O’Connell showed he has plenty of skill but is maybe a season off first team football. Celtic need to recruit in this area and the proposal to bring Kolo Toure to Paradise could turn out to be a master stroke.
Not only would it bring experience to Centre Back alongside Erik Sviatchenko, the 35 year old can help mentor Eoghan and fill in for the perennially injured Simunovic.
There was more good news for the Bhoys with Ryan Christie and Scott Allan linking up for a goal which was selfless on Allan’s part and merciless on Christie’s.
Both must survive the cull and I cant wait to see these Bhoys tear both Premiership and hopefully European teams to shreds this season.
In the 2nd half Captain Scott Brown added energy to the holding role after Biton had been largely uninspiring.
Johansen offered little to suggest he will be staying with his performance and Celtic will rue not taking the 5 million Pounds Aston Villa were willing to pay in January.
The 2nd half team whilst more established lacked urgency. Young Ralston and Roberts showed their attacking ethic but overall the team was happy enough to sit on the lead of the first half young Bhoys.
Regardless today was a great day to be a Hoops fan, Rodgers chalked up his first win, Christie and Allan showed glimpses of what is to come and Saidy Janko looks to have answered the question of who will play at Right Back in our impending European campaign.
