Mission improbable in Germany

Sharing is caring!

If I was a betting man I wouldn’t be wagering the bank on Celtic tonight, history has been against us in Europe away especially against teams from the top 5 Footballing nations funnily enough with the exception of England.

Tonight we are taking on a very good team in RB Leipzig, we were embarrassed in the second half by their cousins in Salzburg a few weeks back and that came down more to mentality than anything.

We all know that Celtic can play like world beaters when they are on their day, but we can look abjectly terrible as well, it all depends which Celtic turns up to play tonight.

For all the talk of our leaky defence we have a couple of decent Centre Halves in Boyata and Benkovic and the ever strong Tierney at Left back, I assume Lustig will play and much like Celtic, it depends what mood the Swede is in.

He fluctuates from game to game, he was horrendous vs Salzburg and came home to Captain the team to a thumping win over St. Johnstone in the Premiership.

We need Lustig to play as he does for Sweden or for Celtic domestically, he is caught out, isolated and taken to pieces far too often on the continent.

In midfield, we have Rogic hitting peak form again and the big Aussie will be key for his customary hour, Jamesie will be suspended for this game which is a big loss as is the Skipper Scott Brown.

I assume we will see Mulumbu take over from Broony at defensive mid, he played well vs Salzburg and was one of the few bright spots.

This game won’t decide our future in the competition, but it will show us a lot about what our expectations should be in Europe in general.

A poor performance will scotch any ideas that the current playing group can take this team forward, we are clearly missing Moussa in the box and Armstrong around it not to say Paddy on the flank.

We desperately need 90 minutes of graft from Odsonne Edouard, we have spent a fortune on him and seen disinterested spells at times, he must rise to the occasion.

Funnily enough, we still have a team strong enough to win the treble, something that will be put to the test on Sunday, a poor performance tonight and we will know that is the best we can hope for.

An improbable performance tonight and we can dream a little longer.
