When Neil Lennon took over Celtic after Tony Mowbray’s disastrous tenure, his best player, or at leats most expensive commodity was Aiden McGeady, himself a polarising player among Celtic’s support.
You either loved his pace, assists and goals or loathed the way he tumbled on the floor, Lennon sold him for 9 million pounds and with that money rebuilt the team and eventually conquered Barcelona.
Now Lennon has a similar player on his books, yet again a polarising member of the team among the support whereby we have a player of undoubted quality who is often accused of only turning up for the big games, I speak of course about Oli Ntcham.
Ntcham came to the club for a little over 4 million from Manchester City, himself a player at the crossroads, not good enough to break into the first team but too good to be discarded lightly.
He flourished at Celtic with his partnership with Moussa Dembele but was largely disinterested this year and looks in need of a new challenge at a new club.
Celtic of course, turned down 2 bids from Porto reported to be around 14 million pounds and with AVB looking to bring in fresh troops at Marseilles, he has been linked with a move to the French giants.
If a bid of around 14 million was tabled again it would seem best for both parties for it to be accepted, with the money Lennon could again go out and pick up the team that can play his system to win 9 in a row.
We have been linked with several players from the English Championship and young Turnbull from Motherwell whilst the club remains keen on McKenna from Aberdeen, should Ntcham be sold we would easily be able to afford the lot and a Right Back as well.
It is an unpopular opinion, but we do not need a major restructure this summer, we need major reinforcements to our backline, an attacking option or 2 and little else.
Bain, Tierney, Ajer, Christie, Forrest, Brown, Edouard and McGregor walk into the team after all, Rogic, Sinclair, Griffiths and Johnston clamouring for spots.
We desperately need a Right Back and a Centre Half, with Shved coming in and Bayo starting his first full season we already have 2 attacking options coming in for the new season.
Should we sell Ntcham, we would likely be able to bring in McKenna at Centre Half to partner big Kris, and have 7-8 million to buy a Right Back with most of the other players we have been linked to available on Bosmans or minimal Dembele style FIFA payments.
Regardless, Ntcham is surplus to requirements, a sale to France would bring in the money needed for Lennon to buy who he wants, put his stamp on the club and take us forward to 9 in a row and beyond.
